Patrick Beverley signs one-year deal with Sixers

Patrick Beverley has signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, his podcast “Pat Bev Pod” announced on its Twitter account Saturday afternoon. The deal will be worth the minimum, according to Kyle Neubeck of PhillyVoice.com

Beverley will now be with his fifth team in four years after spending his first eight NBA seasons with two.

In 67 combined games with the Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Bulls last season, Beverley averaged 6.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 0.9 steals. He shot 40.0 percent shooting and 33.5 percent from 3-point range.

Over his 11-year career, the 6-foot-1 guard’s averaged 9.3 points, 4.1 boards, 3.4 assists and 1.3 steals per game, making an All-Defensive three times, most recently in 2019-20, when he made the All-Defensive second team.

Beverley will fill in for a vacated Shake Milton, who signed a two-year deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves on the first day of the 2023 free agency period Friday. With James Harden’s abrupt trade request earlier this week, it will be difficult to completely identify where Beverley will slot into Philadelphia’s rotation.

But he still adds two-way toughness; he is a capable spot-up shooter from beyond the arc and a pesky defender at the point-of-attack, despite being undersized relative to the rest of his counterparts. He makes up for that with his grittiness and effort, however.

Beverley helped Chicago be one of the league’s best defenses in the second half of the season after he signed there in the buyout market. Now, he joins another formidable defense with Nick Nurse in the driver’s seat–where anything’s on the table schematically. It also helps to have P.J. Tucker and reigning MVP Joel Embiid flanking Beverley on its back-line to make up for any shortcomings elsewhere.
