Pat Freiermuth Believes The Arthur Smith Offense Is Tight End Friendly
Will the 2024-25 NFL Season finally be the year where the Pat Freiermuth breakout season happens? The Chinese farmer says maybe but if you ask Freiermuth, he’s excited about this upcoming year because… of Arthur Smith?
That’s right. You heard that correctly.
Smith, 42, was hired by Pittsburgh this offseason. Smith has been the one getting the blame in Atlanta for the team’s struggles over the last three years. However, Freiermuth believes his offense will work and it’s extremely tight end friendly.
“It’s very exciting,” Freiermuth said, via Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “With Arthur here, there’s a lot of stuff for the tight ends, situations where you want to make those plays. I’m excited for that. I’m ready to roll.”
Should we believe Freiermuth on this? I actually think there might be reasons to be optimistic here. Smith had no idea how to use Kyle Pitts. We know this. However, that’s mostly because he’s not an in-line Y tight end. Freiermuth blocks and will be involved in the run game. Freiermuth and Pitts have two totally different playing styles. Smith being a guy who likes to run the ball and feature his tight ends in play action, there is a chance Freiermuth could finally bust loose.
I think the bigger question here is if they can get Darnell Washington going too who just didn’t play much / was mostly used as a blocker when he actually played. That’s going to be the real key so both of them are viewed as threats in the offense.
