It appears we have our answer to the Baker Mayfield vs. Sam Darnold debate. Mayfield may have won the battle winning the Week 1 starting job. However, Darnold won the war. Carolina has decided that they want to see Darnold to close the season. With PJ Walker slated to remain as the backup, the Panthers have decided to move on entirely from Baker and are set to release him.
NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport was the first to report the news:
How about that 2018 NFL Draft class? Is it fair to call it the Josh Allen draft now? Not that it’s surprising! Hope you read my college notes! Hope you didn’t read PFF instead! Boy, did they blow this call!
Sorry, I had to. This site is called Vendetta after all. It would only be right to mention that PFF called Mayfield the greatest quarterback prospect they’ve ever seen while I called him a 4th rounder.
Okay, back to Mayfield. It would be fair to call Baker’s tenure in Carolina as underwhelming. At the end of the day, Mayfield finishes his Panthers tenure with a 1-5 record, 57.8 completion percentage, and 6-6 TD to INT ratio. The numbers here tell most of the story. Baker was about as bad as it gets during his tenure with Carolina.
Given the season ending injury to starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, could the San Francisco 49ers be the next landing spot for the former Oklahoma quarterback? Maybe, just maybe. Josh Johnson was brought up for now but things could change.
