Oshae Brissett signed a two year contract with a player option last Summer. The deal was only for the minimum so Brissett is going to take his chances and test the free agent market by declining his player option. The real question that needs to be asked is does this actually mean he’s leaving the Celtics?
Spotrac’s Keith Smith (tweet) was the first to report the news:
Brissett, 26, was set to earn $2.5 million this year with the Celtics. The problem is because Brissett doesn’t have three years of service time with the team and or wasn’t acquired via trade, Boston doesn’t have bird rights here. If you don’t know what that means, it’s okay. In simpler terms, the Celtics can only offer Brissett the minimum again.
I don’t want to bore you with stats. You can click the player linker link in the previous paragraph for that. The bottom line is Brissett is probably going to get an opportunity for larger dollars elsewhere. He’s a 6-foot-7 wing who brings grinder vibes. After being a bench piece on a championship team, someone will likely offer more than the minimum. The prime years are probably still on the way here too. He’s not a threat from 3 but made the preliminary team Canada roster for a reason. Brissett certainly proved he belongs in the league this season.
The good news here for Boston is that they truly needed to free up a roster spot. The C’s still have 12 players under contract and the draft hasn’t even happened yet. There is also going to be another veteran player out there in free agency who wants to ring chase with this team.
Time will tell but if we really ponder our way through this, I’d guess Brissett is playing for someone else next season.
