Osa Odighizuwa has turned into a hit for the Cowboys since they drafted him out of UCLA. The defensive tackle was poised to hit free agency for the first time in his career but that won’t be happening. Dallas has agreed to a contract extension Odighizuwa that will keep him in the state of Texas for the foreseeable future.
Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:
Odighizuwa, 26, will sign a four year deal that will pay him $80 million with $52 million in guarantees. Dallas was prepared to use the franchise tag on Odighizuwa if they couldn’t get a long term deal done. Fortunately, the two sides worked something out.
This deal needed to be done. When you think of what Dallas needs, they need more help at defensive tackle, not less. With the Mazi Smith pick turning into a total flop, the middle of their defense would have become a black hole if Odighizuwa left town.
Last season, Odighizuwa notched career-highs in sacks (4.5), tackles (47) and quarterback hits (23). He’s a young player that’s only getting better too. Not an all world run defender but can really do some things getting after the quarterback.
It will be interesting to see his growth under new defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, who runs a basic zone scheme and relies on his front four to anchor the defense. Time will tell if the coaching change proves to be a wise one or not.
