Orioles Wanted Jeff Hoffman But Flunked Him On The Physical

Jeff Hoffman ended up signing with Toronto this offseason but that almost wasn’t the case. It sure sounds like the former East Carolina product was on his way but Baltimore but didn’t pass the physical in order to close the agreement.

Robert Murray of FanSided reported the following:

“Hoffman and the Baltimore Orioles reached an agreement on a three-year, $40 million contract earlier this week, sources say. The Orioles, however, flagged Hoffman’s physical — two sources say it was his right shoulder — and ultimately signed right-hander Andrew Kittredge to a one-year, $10 million contract, sources say.”

Hoffman, 32, ended up signing for $7 million less, but in reality if you factor in Canadian taxes, it’s significantly less than what he could have gotten with the Orioles.

This one will be a curious one to monitor because Hoffman hasn’t been the definition of injury prone during his career. It’s not like he’s missed substantial time with arm injuries in the past. Since moving to a bullpen role, he’s been one of the best in the business at doing it. He didn’t spend a single day on the IL over the last two years.

He would have been a huge piece for the O’s bullpen too. Heading into 2025, it will mostly be the same except washed up Craig Kimbrel isn’t there anymore. It will be Felix Bautista, Seranthony Dominguez, and Yennier Cano at the back of the pen for the O’s next year.
