The new college football playoff expansion sucks and anyone who’s willing to argue for it is just uneducated. Nevertheless, since I have no ability to change the inevitable, let’s at least try to stay positive? There is one obvious positive to CFB playoff expansion and it has nothing to do with more football.
It might be a minor positive but it’s a positive nonetheless. There will be 70% fewer articles, TV segments, etc of coaches being on the hot seat that never deserve to be on the hot seat. A perfect example of this is Penn State. A team that just won the Rose Bowl but is somehow deemed as unsuccessful because they haven’t made the playoff yet under James Franklin. Under this new format, Penn State is going to be frequent playoff visitors thanks to the new idiotic rules. They won’t be any better or worse than in previous years. They will just have a new level of redefined success to trick the brains of people who aren’t as intelligent.
There is a real petition out there to get Franklin fired. ESPN’s done hundreds of segments on whether he’s good enough, should leave, etc. If he makes the playoff, those same people shut up. Not because their team is any better. But because there is a new bar of success that has somehow been achieved when in reality it’s irrelevant.
Programs like this won’t ever have a real chance of winning the National Title but I guess they will have something to hang their hat on? It will take a while for people to realize that in their brains but I guess that’s just the world we’re going to have to live in. If this were the NFL, there would be segments talking about if John Harbaugh deserves to keep his job. Luckily the playoffs get rid of that nonsense.
The fact of the matter is there are a lot of really, really smart head coaches out there. If it means there are six fewer head coaches in the hot seat, then I guess cheers to that. I look forward to not hearing about whether or not Lane Kiffin (or whoever you want to name) deserves to keep his job. Way to go!
