On this day 89 years ago, baseball legend Babe Ruth called his shot in Game 3 of the World Series. The home run is not only one of the most famous Yankee home runs of all time, but one of the most talked-about moments in the sports long storied history.
All baseball fans have heard of or have seen this moment, I grew up playing Wiffle Ball in the park attempting to do anything similar to what Ruth pulled off. The game has changed so much over the last fifty years. Fans are no longer wearing suits in the bleachers, players are allowed to show emotion on the field. When Ruth “called his shot” he was doing something so arrogant, so unheard of at the time – but it was awesome.
As I got older and more and more information became available to me, this awesome moment seemed to be cheapened. Some people say he was just pointing at fans, some say he was pointing to the flag pole showing he wanted the ball to go. There is a longer video on YouTube that has some commentary from writers and players from their perspective.
I wish this moment was investigated so much by baseball historians. If we could have just left this mythical moment be at enjoying it for what it was, a great home run. Instead, we had to pick it apart and we have to know if he actually pointed to the outfield.
Maybe that is what makes this so great, the unknown, the debate, the fact that nobody will truly ever know if the Great Bambino called his shot, or if he was just calling out some rowdy Chicago Cubs fans.
