Everyone seems to love North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton. If you came here for a contrarian but fair viewpoint, you came to the right place. I got what feels like 300 more of these to do so let’s not waste anymore time. Here is your 2025 NFL Draft profile on the UNC product.
Hampton, 22, checks in at 6-foot, 221. I’ll be the first to admit, I did not watch a ton of North Carolina this year. He’s not going to be found in the stock report notes at all. UNC just was not a priority for me. With that said, I have a pretty good feel for what his game looks like and saw plenty at the Combine to feel confident what we’re getting here. For the record, I liked Javonte Wiliams more coming out but I fully admit I watched that Sam Howell team than this current iteration of the Tar Heels.
Speaking of the Combine, you can find my notes here. You can find all you need to see with the link in the last sentence. Outside of the fast 40 for his size, I was incredibly underwhelmed. Constantly felt late reacting to the short area movement stuff. Wasn’t impressive at all as a pass catcher. He’s a big back that can kinda move but there’s no special there. A lot of this stuff is American Idol and you can just watch him and tell there’s no blue chip level talent here.
You can tell he’s a one cut runner who gets downhill. You’re not getting anything beyond that. No creativity. Can catch dump offs and easy check downs, but isn’t a weapon in the passing game beyond that. Only has one gear to him and has weird instincts. Way too many times you will see him run into his own lineman just out of being late to react.
Now, the production is there. Contributed as a freshman but the last two years were really good. Keep in mind, this is ACC play, and that conference has been a total shell of itself,f but regardless, he checks that box. 5.9 yards per carry and nine touchdowns in each of those seasons. That’s while eclipsing north of 1,500 yards in each of those campaigns. Has some receiving production too.
Now, if he can see it he has the initial burst with power. That’s what his bread and butter is. It’s why he has that production. Big body that’s going to give you the no-nonsense stuff. Not afraid of taking big contact on hits either. Although, mostly run out of shotgun so I wonder what he will look like under more under-center looks while lacking that elusiveness. Stays forward, can’t take a cutback lane to save his life.
I have a late round grade on Omarion Hampton. Somewhere in the 5th, 6th, or 7th round is where I’d be willing to go here. Stylistically, he kinda looks like Breece Hall, but it’s a good tick down from that in terms of speed and pass catching.
Comp = Less talented, likely less knucklehead version of Joe Mixon with an added Beanie Wells stink mixed in.
