This was a concern that I had when it came to this whole NIL situation. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for players getting their money. It brought us back NCAA Football to our video game consoles, players can finally earn some real money for their name/image/likeness and not have to struggle while in school if they aren’t a big name, etc. But we all know this was bound to happen. Oklahoma State basically just admitted they’re going broke and can’t afford their players, because they’re practically begging fans to donate.
On Monday, the school announced they would be putting QR codes on the back of players’ helmets that direct people to donate to the school’s NIL fund. According to the New York Post, The code will not be visible to fans in the stadium on the helmet itself, but codes will be visible in postgame photos and on coasters in the premium sections of the stadium.
Mike Gundy had this to say on the NIL funding:
“This is a revolutionary step forward to help keep Oklahoma State football ahead of the game,” head coach Mike Gundy said in a statement. “It gives a chance for everyday fans across the world to have a real impact when it comes to supporting the NIL efforts for Cowboy football. I’m thrilled about this opportunity for our players.”
Oklahoma State is going broke. It’s a shame because unfortunately, this might become a trend that we see if it works. Boosters and alumni will always pour money into their schools, so now universities will have to fork out less and less money. There will come a time when all major universities beg their fans to donate so they can land that five-star EDGE rusher. This, I fear, is just the tip of the iceberg.
