Oilers Acquire Trent Frederic

The Edmonton Oilers successfully added some grit to their upcoming chase for another Stanley Cup. Trent Frederic was a piece coveted by many contenders but the Oil will win the sweepstakes here as the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline closes in.

It’s a complicated trade so buckle in. Frederic will head to the Oilers in a three-way deal that includes the following (which was fully released in a press release):

Trade 1: Boston Bruins trade Trent Frederic (50% salary retained) to New Jersey Devils in exchange for unsigned draft choice Petr Hauser.”

Trade 2: New Jersey trades Trent Frederic (50% salary retained) to Edmonton in exchange for unsigned draft choice Shane Lachance.”

Trade 3: Boston trades Max Jones and unsigned draft choice Petr Hauser to Edmonton in exchange for Max Wanner, St. Louis’ second-round pick in 2025 (owned by Edmonton) and Edmonton’s own fourth-round selection in 2026.”

Frederic, 27, was a former Bruins first round pick in 2016. He’s not having the best season notching just eight goals and seven assists for 15 points alongside 44 penalty minutes and a minus-14 rating this season. However, the stats don’t really tell the story with Frederic. He’s a pain in the rear end to play against and is always willing to scrap. He adds much needed toughness to an Oilers team that doesn’t need more skill. He can also play center in a pinch.

On the whole, I like the deal for Edmonton. A really useful player for a playoff run. The only downside is he’s a UFA at the end of the season and they essentially just used the return they got from St. Louis for idiotically failing to match on Philip Broberg. Then again, with double retention, it’s hard to complain about having Frederic on 575K AAV for the rest of the way.
