Denver Nuggets rookie DaRon Holmes II will likely miss the entirety of the 2024-25 season with a torn right achilles, Shams Charania of The Athletic was first to report Friday evening. He suffered the injury in the Nuggets’ Summer League opener in Las Vegas, Nev., on Friday afternoon.
Holmes suffered the injury after blocking a shot attempt from Clippers second-year forward Kobe Brown. Holmes immediately collapsed to the ground and hobbled to the bench in pain.
He finished with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting and 3-of-3 from 3-point range, in addition to seven rebounds and one steal in 25 minutes.
The Nuggets traded up six spots–from No. 28 to 22–to select Holmes. They traded No. 28, No. 56 and a pair of future second-round selections with the Phoenix Suns, who ultimately drafted Virginia forward Ryan Dunn No. 28 overall.
It’s an incredibly unfortunate injury for the consensus All-American. I was looking forward to how he would jell with the Nuggets’ bench unit as a floor-spacing, rim-protecting big. I was high on him behind–and potentially alongside–Nikola Jokic, the best player on the planet who continuously puts players in position to succeed.
We will see where the Nuggets go from here. In terms of re-shuffling any deck chairs, it’s been a disappointing offseason for the Nuggets. At least they signed veteran forward Dario Saric, who operated fairly well (at the start of) last season as a small-ball five in Golden State.
The options could be worse … but it could also be a lot better—truly devastating news for Holmes.
