Notre Dame has suffered a brutal blow to their defense, as star cornerback Benjamin Morrison has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2024 season after suffering a hip injury that will require season-ending surgery. The injury was suffered during last week’s game against Stanford. Morrison totaled 20 tackles and four pass breakups in six starts this season.
While speaking to the media this week, head coach Marcus Freeman gave his thoughts on the injury to Morrison, per ESPN.com:
“Obviously, it’s a blow to our team,” Freeman said. “You lose a captain, great football player, and you feel terrible for the kid. He gives football, he gives preparation, everything he has. It’s just tough. He’s a tough kid, he’s been through this before and he’ll have surgery and get back to work to becoming the best version of Benjamin.”
There’s no two ways about this: this is a brutal injury to suffer for such a highly-rated prospect. Benjamin Morrison, by all accounts, was a lock to be taken in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, but with this injury will teams be skeptical of drafting him off a hip injury? If I were a GM of a CB-needy team and he was on the board, I’m not thinking twice about turning the card in. Morrison was an impact player as a true freshman for the Fighting Irish (totaling six interceptions) and has taken massive strides since then in his skillset.
Benjamin Morrison before the year had an 8.8 prospect grade using my own grading system (subject to change…keep an eye out), and I do not think that grade is going to change. Morrison possesses elite ball skills, playing as a true ball-hawking cornerback. His closing speed is exceptional, and his change of direction is quick using clean footwork (I won’t bore you with a full draft profile just yet). I am very interested in seeing his recovery timeline, as he is on the 2025 Senior Bowl watchlist, which will take place at the end of January next year.
