I would argue that this change should have been made two years ago but nevertheless, North Carolina is finally turning the page on the Mack Brown era. The Tar Heels have fired the former National Championship winning coach with Texas and are now in the process of finding a new head coach.
Matt Zenitz of 247 Sports was the first to report the news:
North Carolina: The Tar Heels are firing coach Mack Brown, sources told 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz. 247Sports’ Inside Carolina also reported that Brown “will not coach UNC beyond the 2024 season.”
It should be noted that this announcement by the program comes one day after Brown declared his intention to return. Translation… UNC was hoping that he would retire. When that didn’t happen, they fired him instead.
Brown, 73, notched a 113-78-1 record with the Tar Heels during two different stints with the team. Brown will coach the team against NC State yet to finish off the regular season. The good news for Brown is that he still has three years remaining on his contract which UNC will now have to pay. He also produced 18 NFL Draft picks during his time with UNC, which is no small feat.
Who knows what’s next for Brown? Maybe he will return to the sports media realm and go back to ESPN. I can’t imagine another major program will hire him again. Maybe a lower level team will be those appear to be the two options after the UNC departure.
