Nobody Should Care About The Mavericks Tanking For Better 2023 NBA Draft Odds

I hate people for a lot of reasons. One of many things I don’t like about humans is their hypocritical nature. If you have been reading this site long enough then you know that I only keep it real here. Nobody should care about the Mavericks tanking for better 2023 NBA Draft odds and you’re a complete moron if this bothers you.

I’m sorry but I’m just never going to care about this tanking stuff. You shouldn’t either. In fact, if you really boil it down I think I have a strong argument that it’s malpractice not to tank. You actually don’t care about your fan base if you’re not looking out of the long term interest of the franchise.

The NBA is the hardest sport to be a general manager in. I’m not sure it’s really arguable. The stars have all the leverage. You have to match salaries in every single trade. Often times taking back bad contracts you don’t want just to make a deal work. It doesn’t exist in any other sport. If free agents don’t pick your city, you are stuck overspending because the CBA tells you that you are forced to spend the money. It’s almost impossible to become good any other way other than landing that next superstar in the draft. Most teams aren’t the Lakers in terms of free agent destinations.

What did you want them to do? That’s what I want to know. On the final day of the regular season, Dallas was already eliminated. They didn’t own the tiebreaker with OKC. Even if they got into the play-in, which is a fake tournament that shouldn’t exist anyway, they weren’t doing anything anyway.

The crazy thing is the tanking wasn’t even bad this year. Who was really out? The Spurs, Rockets, and Blazers? Everyone else tried to win. Even OKC won too many games. This is also a draft that features Victor Wembanyama. A prospect that could quite literally become something we have never seen in the NBA before. We’re also talking about a Mavericks team that has to send their pick to the Knicks if it doesn’t fall inside the top 10.

I’m just not going to hold Dallas to a different standard than the rest of the league. The Blazers just packed it into the toilet for the last two months. Why doesn’t anybody care about them? Nobody should care about this and you’re an idiot if you do. If the Mavericks move up in the lottery, it will all be worth it. If they don’t, they weren’t doing anything late in the year anyway. No harm, no foul.

Here is the best part. If you were running the Mavericks, you would have done the same thing. Lying to yourself isn’t going make you less miserable. I promise.
