Nintendo to Return to GamesCom
For years, E3 was the gold standard when it came to video game conventions. All the developers would be there to show off their latest products, both soft and hardware. As a result, other conventions were sometimes overlooked by these companies. However, with the apparent downfall of E3, events like GamesCom have taken the lead. No more is this evidence than with Nintendo’s announcement that the company will be heading to the convention this year, skipping E3 entirely.
What Does GamesCom Have That E3 Doesn’t?
GamesCom’s biggest advantage is that it’s much more open to the public than E3 ever has been. That’s mostly because E3 was a glorified press conference, while GamesCom is a full-fledged convention. Being more open to the public has very much helped the convention survive both during and after COVID-19, while E3 has struggled and even seems to be at an end, if trends continue. The attendance of the convention is a testament to this.
The success of 2022’s convention, despite the loss of some big names, has brought confidence back to the industry in the viability of the event. With Nintendo taking the leap back into GamesCom, it is likely others will follow behind.
Just What is Nintendo Bringing to The Event?
While nothing has been confirmed yet, upcoming games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will likely be on display at GamesCom 2023, alongside other projects the studio is working on. We’ll just have to wait and see what Nintendo brings out when GamesCom begins in August.
Perhaps something related to Mario will be announced. We haven’t had a proper 3D Mario title since Odyssey, and with the franchise riding off the success of the movie, it would be a perfect time to announce a new title.
