Now listen: I know you’re probably already scratching your head at this one. And if I’m being honest I could understand why you would have this reaction. Geno Smith’s career up to this point has been largely unimpressive. He has spent most of his career as a backup QB. But it’s this very stigma around his career and abrasive personality that has seen him be one of the most underrated players and QBs throughout this season.
This season, Smith has amassed 6 TDs to only 2 picks. Perhaps most surprising of all is how efficient he’s been. Smith currently has a completion percentage of 77.3 which ranks 2nd (yes, 2nd) all-time for a QB through his first 4 games.
Now, you may hear this and think it’s a result of Smith living off check-downs and being afraid to throw the ball downfield. But this is just simply not the case. He currently ranks 4th in the NFL on yards per attempt at 7.4. He has shown an ability to throw the deep ball, as on passes over 20 yards he is 7-13 with 167 yards and 3 TDs. Also, more evidence of this can be seen by the huge 54 yard dime Smith threw to DK Metcalf who was covered tightly by rising star Jeff Okudah.
But perhaps the most shocking thing about all this is that Geno Smith is outplaying his former teammate Russell Wilson. Wilson may end up on this list at some point, which is something that no sane NFL fan would have believed going into this season. He has made many people now believe that the Seahawks have won that trade with the pick capital they gained.
While the season is still quite young, Smith has come out and proven a lot of his doubters wrong. He has shown Seattle that they may have made the right decision in moving on from Wilson when they did. He’s simply been one of the best QBs in the league thus far. It’s time he starts getting recognized for it. The doubters may have wrote him off but he surely hasn’t written back yet.
