The New York Yankees have extended manager Aaron Boone for two more years through the 2027 season, the club announced Thursday.
Boone, who turns 52-years-old in March, was previously entering the last year of his current contract. In seven seasons as manager, he’s 603-429 (.584) with three seasons of at least 99 wins and five with at least 92.
The eighth-year skipper hasn’t quite had quite the success in the postseason, going 22-23–though New York did win the pennant a season ago. Boone did make a consequential error in Game 1, however, which changed the course of the series: He intentionally walked Mookie Betts to load the bases and brought in southpaw Nestor Cortes, who had not pitched in a month-in-a-half, in the bottom of the 10th to face Freddie Freeman.
Lo and behold, it ended in a walk-off grand slam, one of the biggest plays in recent postseason history:
On a more positive note, the Yankees’ brass have continuously expressed their liking for Boone and his ability to connect with players. So this shouldn’t come as a surprise to many, despite the occasional questionable decision-making and the lack of public accountability he holds players to when speaking to reporters.
If Boone finishes out his new extension, he will join Joe Girardi (10 years) and Joe Torre (12 seasons) as the longest-tenured managers since Casey Stengel (1949-1960).
Nevertheless, the Yankees look to defend their AL East crown for the first time in 15 seasons as one of the most talented teams in a wide-open American League. Can Aaron Boone and Co. get over the hump in 2025? Let us know in the comments!
