The New York Yankees have acquired infielder J.D. Davis and cash considerations from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for minor league third baseman Jordan Groshans, the team announced Sunday. To make room on the 40-man roster, they have transferred right-handed arm Nick Burdi to the 60-day injured list.
Davis, 31, was designated for assignment on Monday. He signed with Oakland for $2.5 million ($1 million in incentives) after being released by the San Francisco Giants, who signed third baseman Matt Chapman before the season.
He appeared in just 39 games for the Athletics, slashing .236/.304/.366 (.670 OPS; 96 OPS+) with four doubles, four home runs and five RBIs in 135 plate appearances. Last year with San Francisco, he posted a 105 OPS+ with 18 home runs and 69 RBIs in 144 games. For his career, the corner infielder sports a .259/.341/.427 (.768 OPS+; 112 OPS+) slashline. He’s spent eight seasons with the Houston Astros, New York Mets, Giants and Athletics.
The Yankees have recently been crushed by injuries, most recently to Anthony Rizzo–who’s not looked the same since he suffered a concussion in May of 2023–and Giancarlo Stanton, who got placed on the IL Sunday with a hamstring strain.
The Yankees recently called up infield prospect Ben Rice, who’s been their primary first baseman since Rizzo’s injury, slashing .294/.381/.294 over his first 21 plate appearances. But Davis is a low-cost option who could add some more production in the corner infield and at DH, where New York needs more offense.
Groshans was a former top-100 prospect who’s struggled in Double-A and Triple-A this season. He’s slashed a combined .232/.310/.281 with one home run in 184 plate appearances. He had 65 plate appearances with the Miami Marlins in 2022,, totaling 16 hits and one home run (.619 OPS; 76 OPS+) in 65 plate appearances.
