Nearly one month after it was reported that the New York Mets were pivoting away from re-signing Pete Alonso, they are re-signing him, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan first reported Wednesday.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the deal will be two years, $54 million.
Alonso’s contract will have an opt-out after the first season, making $30 million this season, according to Passan.
Mets owner Steve Cohen was recently very candid with how the negotiation process was with Scott Boras, Alonso’s agent and one of the most powerful men in baseball, calling it “exhausting.” It was also reported by the New York Post that the last offer was around the $68-70 million range over three years which, at best, was $23.3 million AAV.
A two-year deal worth $54M clocks in at $27 AAV, though the opt-out after the first year really makes it a one-year, $30 million deal, assuming he does exercise that.
Next year’s free agency class–headlined by Kyle Tucker and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.–won’t be super stacked with bats. Thus, Alonso’s market may be more open as he enters his age-30 season. He’s coming of his fourth All-Star campaign where he slashed .240/.329/.459 with 34 home runs and 88 RBIs in 695 plate appearances.
Most of all, he’s invaluable to their lineup, even though he’s a negative defender. There was no immediate replacement for him, so it was good business by New York to get a deal done now and see what happens next winter.
