Mets DFA Jorge Lopez amid ejection, postgame comments

Mere hours after New York Mets reliever Jorge Lopez was ejected from their 10-3 loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he was designated for assignment by the organization, New York Post MLB insider Joel Sherman was first to report Wednesday.

Oh, wait, I should also mention he lit a blowtorch on the organization, who’s now lost eight of their last nine, 10 of their last 12 and 13 of their last 16.

Prior to Wednesday’s outing, he appeared in 27 games in relief for the Mets this season. He’s pitched to a 3.12 ERA with a 4.05 WHIP, striking out 19 batters to walking 10 batters in 26.0 innings.

After being named an All-Star with the Baltimore Orioles in 2022, he appeared in 61 combined games with the Minnesota Twins, Miami Marlins and Baltimore last season, which was ultimately rocky for him. He combined for a 5.95 ERA with a 5.76 FIP across 59.0 frames, finishing 15 games with three saves, 49 strikeouts and 22 walks.

He was ejected in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s loss after a Freddie Freeman check-swing did not go his way. He subsequently chucked his glove into the stands, behavior that manager Carlos Mendoza deemed “not acceptable” after the game.

New York is 11 games below .500 and 16 games out of the NL East lead behind the Philadelphia Phillies and six games back of the third-and-final Wild Card spot. They’re not in a good place. They may not be the worst team in baseball, but they’re closer to that than they are the best.
