Levain Bakery has many locations in New York City and has now branched out to other locations in America such as Chicago and soon, Los Angeles.
The first-ever Levain Bakery sits at West 74th Street. Every weekend my father and I would head out to Levain and grab a chocolate walnut cookie, some milk and their staple small loaf of bread. At this point, there was only one location.
The line could be as long as half an hour. My father and I would grow more excited as the line moved, for the celebratory brownstone staircase to sit on towards the end of it. The whole wait was worth it of course, as we knew a beautiful cookie was waiting for us inside.
Levain has grown immensely since then, gaining popularity over the last few years. The success is well deserved, as each treat they sell is equally delicious. The desserts are sweet, thick and gooey, while the savory bites, such as the bread, are warm, cheap and fresh. Levain is the perfect spot for a quick bite to eat.
Levain is known for its huge cookies, which are around the size of a fist. These cookies come in eight flavors, ranging from dark chocolate chocolate chip to rocky road. Although there are many flavors to choose from, I’m waiting for a classic chocolate chip cookie that focuses solely on the bite of the semi-sweet chocolate chip.
Each cookie has its own personality and depth, as the bakery clearly shows special attention to each one. The dark chocolate chip is rich and sophisticated, while the classic chocolate chip walnut focuses less on sweetness and more on the nutty bite of the walnut. The array of flavors plus their giant size make Levain a special bakery.
These cookies will always keep me and other Levain fans coming back for more. The colossal cookie is the perfect pick-me-up when you need something warm and sweet to fill your soul. If you’re in New York City, Levain Bakery is definitely something you should check out!
