In case you missed it, I recently appeared on UnHinged, part of the Undroppables network. If you want to check that out, click here. I bring that up for one specific reason. The host of the show tells a story about how the Raiders decided to snipe Connor Cook from the Cowboys. Dallas had to settle for Dak Prescott. I promise Kyle Monangai will enter the chat soon, but we’re getting to that point.
The premise of the story is that NFL teams sometimes accidentally make correct decisions when their initial plan was to make the wrong decision. I’m a huge fan of Monangai, and he has been one of the few draft picks Ryan Poles has made that I actually approve of (NFC North Draft Grades here). When you consider the fact that Monangai was Chicago’s Plan Z and they got snipped on several other players at the position, it makes far more sense what actually happened here.
Chicago Tribune‘s Dan Wiederer reported that the Bears were targeting Ashton Jeanty in round one, TreVeyon Henderson in round two, and Cam Skattebo in Round four. They were snipped on every single guy.
“The Bears, it should be noted, had interest in all three of those backs, each taken in different pockets across the three days of the draft,” Wiederer wrote.
Multiple ESPN reports have come out that the Bears tried to trade up for Jeanty and Henderson. The latter was taken by the Patriots one pick before Chicago was on the clock in the second round (thank god).
By the way, immediately after the draft, there was another leak that the Bears weren’t thrilled that Monangai was the only RB they left the draft with. They want to add another veteran to the room.
Ryan Poles is an idiot, and if Monangai flourishes, let’s just remember that he didn’t really want him.
By the way, you can see the dysfunction oozing from this organization. Why are all these leaks coming out? If you’re smart and you understand what’s happening here, it stems from a lack of leadership and a clear power struggle. Kevin Warren has his thumb on the pulse of what’s going on and that’s probably not a great thing.
