This League! Everything seems to change every 20 minutes. The Brooklyn Nets are the expected landing spot for Kyrie Irving. Wait… hold the phone. Now it appears the Nets may not actually want Irving. They saw what Irving looks like as a solo act and are wary of signing him without adding another max caliber free agent.
Brian Lewis of The New York Post had the following:
The Post has reported the Nets’ dream offseason is pairing Kevin Durant with Kyrie Irving, and sources say that hasn’t changed.
“The question is if they can’t land Durant, do they still want Irving? Especially if they have to lose D’Angelo Russell — their own 23-year-old homegrown All-Star — to get him?
It’s a question that has turned into a civil war among the fan base. It also has become an internal debate the Nets are having right now.
The Post has confirmed Brooklyn might have qualms about signing the enigmatic Irving if he isn’t bringing the injured Durant with him.
Other teams had already backed off of pursuing Irving with similar concerns over the way things went awry in Boston. If the Nets do the same, it would mean keeping Russell, who is a younger and cheaper option as a restricted free agent.”
WOW. Could you imagine if Irving declares his intentions to sign with the Nets and then Brooklyn comes out and says – No Thanks! That would be unbelievable. Now even if the Nets can’t add another max free agent, I would assume that they would add Irving. However, if this rumor is true, this would be flat out embarrassing for Kyrie.
I don’t know who the Nets will add. Kevin Durant isn’t even healthy and may prefer the Knicks or Warriors. Tobias Harris is an option but I’m not even sure I’d max him. I doubt this rumor is true enough that the Nets would actually prefer Russell. If that happens, I really want to watch Kyrie run with his tail between his legs back to Boston.
