Should the NBA adopt the LTIR rule? Here’s exactly why this change would make a ton of sense for the good of the sport. (Winslow Townson-Imagn Images)

The NBA Needs An LTIR Rule

I already know what you’re thinking. You’re tired of me taking a dump on Adam Silver. It’s a fair thought. I could just stop complaining about it and shift all my attention to the NFL, NHL, and MLB. Many people have already done that. It’s why the ratings are in the toilet. However, Trey is not one to take the path of least resistance. I’m going to keep complaining about it until someone does the right thing and punches Adam Silver in the face for being a noob. Let’s just add this one to the list. The NBA absolutely needs to adopt the LTIR rule.

The luxury tax rules are killing this sport. The rules basically make you tear your team down once you become too good. Here’s the problem I have with it.

Why no flexibility?

How can you determine pay checks based on games played, but not also be proactive about future injuries? The NBA has that you must play 65 games rule to be eligible for awards, but absolutely nothing in place when severe injuries occur.

Here’s where I’m going with this. Jayson Tatum is out for essentially the entire year with a torn Achilles. Prior to the injury, he was someone who did right by the NBA and suited up in every game. Sure, the Celtics can apply for a designated player exception, but there’s no point in doing so because that additional player also counts against the cap. The way the NBA has handled this entire thing is a jumbled mess.

I’m not asking for miracles here. I just think it’s borderline insane that you’re going to punish a team because a player got injured and then provide no real pathway to allowing the team to replace said player. The entire set up is a joke, and it’s part of many reasons why the NHL is just a far superior product. Why should a franchise be taxed at an additional rate even if the player isn’t playing? By the way, for an injury we all saw happen on the court, not one of them phantom ones, teams make up for load management.

Enough is enough. This new CBA the NBA has in place is a joke. The league needs to intitude audibles like this one or they’re going to head down an even darker path.
