NBA G-League Adds Independent Team in Mexico City

The NBA G-League continues to grow. The NBA has added a G-League in Mexico City as its own G-League team. Maybe it’s not big news but it shows the growth in the NBA. The full NBA release via NBC NBA:

The NBA G League, the NBA’s official minor league, and Capitanes, a professional basketball team based in Mexico City, today announced that Capitanes will join the NBA G League as its first team from outside the U.S. and Canada.

Capitanes becomes the NBA G League’s 29^th team and will make its debut for the 2020-21 season.  The team will play its NBA G League home games at the Gimnasio Juan de la Barrera in Mexico City.

This move could lead to some more news in the NBA. I have been dying for Adam Silver to just consider an NBA expansion. I have listed a few teams here and there, but I never considered Mexico City as an option for an NBA expansion. This NBA G-League expansion is great for the league because of the excess of talent the league has. With 29 teams in the G-League, there are almost enough teams to have an affiliate for each one.

Adam Silver, It’s Time For A NBA Expansion

The Denver Nuggets and the Portland Trail Blazers are the only teams without a G-League affiliate. I wouldn’t be surprised if this becomes the Nuggets G-League affiliate. If the Portland Trail Blazers need a G-League affiliate, I like Seattle as a place for them as the 30th G-League team. I could also see the Blazers using Vancouver as a spot for their G-League affiliate. 29 just seems like an odd number, I can see the 30th team being added real soon to complete each team. The NBA grows every day. I’m excited about it and can’t wait to hear new things that happen.
