If you thought the Golden State Warriors would let Klay Thompson play in any other jersey than a Warriors jersey (I thought that), you may be wrong. At least one NBA executive believes that Klay Thompson isn’t going anywhere. Here is the full quote provided by HoopsHype:
“Klay’s not going anywhere,” one NBA executive predicted while chatting with HoopsHype. “The Warriors can’t let him walk. He’s a four-time champion, and they can’t really replace him. At some point, if a player isn’t getting the job done and still wants to play as he gets older, you’d come off the bench, and he’s doing that while playing better. Maybe they tie his deal to Steph’s.
“Klay’s value is in the $20-25 million range. I think other teams would sign him. If you’re Detroit, wouldn’t you love that level of maturity and experience? Monty Williams wants a grown-up. If you’re the Magic, don’t you want a grown-up? They need a legitimate shooting guard. Jalen Suggs is a combo guard. I think Gary Harris could be gone this summer. Let the point guard position be a combination of Anthony Black, Suggs, and Cole Anthony. Orlando likes size, which Klay has, and he’d give them shooting.”
I think, at the end of the day, the Warriors will treat Klay Thompson as a Warrior legend for his role in their dynasty.
They can’t hold on to sentimental value forever though, especially if the price tag is too much. The Warriors still have a business to run at the end of the day, a declining business but a business nonetheless.
Letting Klay Thompson walk if he’s asking too much wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. Giving a 34 year-old declining player $25 million a year is a mistake. But, if that’s what the Warriors want to do, so be it.
