Is The NBA Actually Trying To Crack Down On Flopping?

Let’s just call it what it is. The NBA is a bad product. Common fouls 15 years ago are now flagrant fouls today. Everyone falls over if they simply get sneezed on. It’s embarrassing the way these incredibly gifted athletes act on the court. It’s a charmin ultra soft league and changes need to be made. Is the NBA actually trying to do the right thing and crack down on flopping?

We might actually get some good news on that front. Don’t get your hopes totally up but According to the Athletic, the NBA Board of Governors are set to vote on two major rule changes on July 11th.

  • The first is that if a player is caught in the act of flopping, the opposing team would be granted technical free throws.
  • The second rule change potentially would be to give a team a second challenge if the first one is successful.

I love both of these rules. How do we make them happen? I think we can use other sports as examples of why both of these rule changes should go into effect.

The NHL has a rule in place called embellishment. If you try to flop, you go to the penalty box and it’s five on four for the other team. It’s a great rule and really hinders flopping. You also get fined on top of it for embellishment. The NBA might want to even consider following suit.

You want to flop? No problem. Five on four for the other team for two minutes. Imagine how wild that would be? If it derails flopping, I’m for it.

The NFL has this rule in place but it’s slightly different. You get a third challenge if the first two are successful. NFL games are also longer so it makes sense as to why they get an extra one. I like this rule because we should be incentivizing smart behavior. If you’re smart with your challenges, reward those teams. Nobody should have an issue with that.
