Free-agent starter Nathan Eovaldi isn’t going anywhere! The 34-year-old has re-signed with the Texas Rangers on a three-year, $75 million deal, Fansided’s Robert Murray first reported Tuesday.
According to Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News, the deal includes a signing bonus (currently undisclosed) with the contract being backloaded, beginning at $18 million in 2025.
I understand wanting to give yourself some wiggle room to avoid the $241 million CBT for the third consecutive year if you aren’t planning to be super competitive, but this is still a fascinating contract to give to a pitcher in his mid-30s.
Eovaldi’s still been a consistently productive arm. Over his last four seasons, he hasn’t exceeded a 3.90 ERA nor a 4.30 FIP, including leading the American League in FIP (2.79) in 2021 with the Boston Red Sox.
Last season, he posted a 3.80 ERA with 166 strikeouts to just 42 walks in 170.2 innings, one of just two times he’s exceeded 150 innings since 2015. His ability to avoid walks and get hitters to chase has been excellent, but he gets hit hard and doesn’t have quite the same zip on his fastball that he previously had.
Eovaldi slots into the rotation with Jacob deGrom, who’s made nine combined starts the last two seasons due to injury, plus Jon Gray, Tyler Mahle and Cody Bradford. At minimum, they still likely need to get another rotation arm plus address their bullpen, which was a disaster in 2024.
That should be accomplishable with a limited budget, though the pitching market is spiking–in part due to Eovaldi’s new deal.
