The Steelers rushing attacking was simply horrible in 2020. With James Connor frequently injured and the Steelers resorting to the likes of Jaylen Samuels and Benny Snell Jr, Pittsburgh was unable to consistently move the ball on the ground. This offseason, however, Connor left for Arizona and the Steelers drafted Najee Harris with the 24th overall pick. Given the lack of talent in the Steelers RB room, Harris will be the lead back from day one, and he will be a fantasy football stud in 2021.
Although there are some worries about his speed, Harris had a 3.1 forced miss tackle rate, the third-best in this year’s rookie class over the past three seasons. His ability to break tackles along with his size should more than compensate for his slight lack of speed. Currently, Harris is ranked below guys like David Montgomery and Chris Carson, and while these players are not bad, Harris is superior in size and elusiveness and should be ranked above them.
Harris also has an extremely large catch radius, which should be especially helpful in PPR formats. Also take into consideration that Big Ben likes dumping the ball off to his running back, and we might be looking at the next Brees-Kamara tandem. This receiving ability made Kamara the highest-scoring RB in fantasy football in 2020 and illuminates a path that Harris can follow to be elite in 2021.
Above all, what makes Harris the most tantalizing fantasy football RB is the fact that he should get 20+ touches weekly. In a run-heavy and short-passing Steelers scheme, Harris should get the ball a lot, and though the Steelers do not boast an elite offensive line, Harris has the ability to consistently move the ball on the ground if given the opportunities to do so. Such volume is rare among RBs in the league and if Harris can utilize his chances, he will surely break out in 2021.
Harris will break out in 2021 and be the missing link for a Steelers offense that sputtered in 2020. In fantasy drafts, there is no doubt that running back is the most important position, and selecting a back that has to ability and opportunity to consistently produce is vital. Harris’ opportunity and tackle-breaking ability should let him shine, so invest in Harris – he could very well be the best running back in 2021 fantasy football.
