Molly McCann is now a strawweight. After an underwhelming performance at UFC London, McCann announced on Instagram that she will be dropping down a weight class to compete in the women’s strawweight division.
UFC London was a poor night for McCann. In the co-main event, McCann suffered a first-round submission loss to Julija Stoliarenko. That is never a great outcome, but it is even worse considering McCann desperately needed a bounce-back victory after losing to Erin Blanchfield at UFC 281.
McCann’s rough patch led to her future looking awfully bleak, but changing weight classes can add reasons for optimism. The question will be if that is enough for McCann to find consistent success.
McCann, 33, cited size difference as a factor in her struggles in the women’s flyweight division.
“We have one more adjustment to make and I believe that will make all the difference in the world, the smallest in the division makes it tough when the opponents are so much bigger,” McCann wrote. “So for me it’s time to drop down and face the girls who are the same size.”
At 5-foot-4, McCann was fairly short for the women’s flyweight division. Additionally, that size difference also led to issues in grappling sequences which ultimately resulted in several losses.
The UFC women’s flyweight division has a weight limit of 125 pounds while the strawweight has a 115-pound limit. The extra ten pounds that come at flyweight can make a major difference at that level of the sport. McCann will be walking away from the women’s flyweight division with a UFC record of 6-5 in the weight class.
McCann has not fought professionally at 115 pounds, but, according to Tapology, she has one amateur fight in the weight class.
The drop in weight will provide McCann with a fresh slate in a division. That is great, but she will need to ensure that she does not add losses to that slate.
