The implementation of the pitch clock across MLB was one of the league’s more decisive rule changes it’s seen recently. Opinions were scattered all over the place, with seemingly half loving it and half hating it. Hell, even here at Vendetta we’ve had articles with opposite viewpoints on this very topic. But whether or not you love it or hate it, it’s going to be a part of the playoffs and won’t be changed at all, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Friday.
Now I know for all the older people who want baseball to die this is terrible news. But for the life of me, I can’t figure out why. The average game is almost 30 minutes shorter, which was by far MLB’s biggest problem.
Along with that, 2023 is looking like the first time in nine years in which attendance won’t decline. It in fact has gone up both at home and in the stadium. According to Forbes and Playfly Sports, ratings for the 29 U.S.-based baseball teams have gone up three percent. That may not seem like much, but it’s huge when you realize attendance has been in decline for the last nine years.
Games have also just simply become more fun to watch. Stolen bases are significantly up along with balls batted play. It’s been a better product to watch and I don’t care what you think.
You will probably cite injuries, but I already did an article explaining why that’s all B.S. News flash, when you’re pitching from the age of 13 the way these guys are today, you likely are going to suffer arm injuries–not because you are on some timer that speeds you up a little bit.
It’s led to more exciting baseball and who doesn’t want that in the playoffs? Ratings have gone up in the regular season so it stands to reason the same will happen in the playoffs.
Get with the times people. The pitch clock is here to stay whether you like it or not and it just may save our nation’s beloved sport. It already kind of is in just one short season. In the last couple of years, you could argue MLB is starting to see more younger people interested in baseball. I won’t sit here and say it’s all because of the pitch clock, but I’m willing to bet a fat man it’s at least playing a part.
Baseball was dying but the pitch clock may just be what saves it. If you aren’t a fan of that, then I honestly don’t know what to tell you, but don’t complain when this sport becomes irrelevant in another 20 years because a 15-second timer “ruined” the game.
