Next up is the first pitcher we will cover, and boy is he a good one. That, of course, being Seth Hernandez, who has been on many people’s radar since he was just a Junior in High School tossing complete game shutouts.
Now, at 18 years old, Hernandez has turned into one of the most complete pitchers in this entire class. Let’s start with the fastball. It’s reached triple digits before, but more comfortably sits in the mid-90s at 96 to 97 mph.
Just look at how easily he’s able to get through that motion and still hit 95 on his fastball. In a time where it seems like every pitcher gets Tommy John, Seth Hernandez and his effortless motion could break that trend
He has a great secondary pitch in his changeup, which generates a lot of whiffs with its dramatic movement and the way he’s able to play it off his plus fastball. Even if it’s not as effective of a strikeout pitch at the next level, it can serve as just a great change of pace out pitch for him.
His curveball, a traditional 12-to-6 pitch, can become a truly lethal weapon for Hernandez if he can master it. Already, he can get it to generate 3000 RPMs. Imagine what he can turn that pitch into with some MLB-level training.
His slider is a work in progress and has only been featured recently at the showcase circuit. It’s a harder slider with not a ton of movement, which leads me to believe it will become more of a cutter as time goes on, Either way, that extra pitch should be huge for a guy like Seth Hernandez.
All of this is to say Hernadnez still has great command of the strike zone. His 6-foot-4 frame is an ideal one for the modern pitcher. It allows him to go through his motion effortlessly and hit that mid to high 90s we see on his fastball.
His motion is very repeatable, allowing him to be on time with his delivery often. He has a great feel for all of his pitches, allowing him to stay around the strike zone. Limiting walks in the process.
The 18-year-old is currently committed to Vanderbilt, but I know many MLB teams that would be eager to add him. He has a great work ethic and, at a young age, already shows the ability to make adjustments on the fly to better his game.
