The Minnesota Vikings have re-signed cornerback Byron Murphy to a three-year, $66 million deal, NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero first reported Monday.
The deal will include $35 million guaranteed, according to NFL insider Josina Anderson.
Murphy, 27, was one of the best available cornerbacks on the market, which was hit heavy in the first day of NFL Free Agency. D.J. Reed, Charvarius Ward and Carlton Davis all found new homes. With most of Minnesota’s secondary hitting the market, it felt paramount to reunite with Murphy before the market became too dry.
The 5-foot-11 is also coming off his best season as a pro. He tallied a career-mosts in with 81–including 62 solo–interceptions (6) and tackles-for-loss (6). Murphy made the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career and it netted him the biggest payday of his career.
The Minnesota Vikings still have work to do in the secondary, but nabbing Murphy is one more box that general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah checks. The $66 million is a lot of money for a player of Murphy’s caliber, but the market is the market — and his guarantee is roughly half of the reported total. So I’m very curious to see how the contract is structured with the cap hits and money flow, which have not been disclosed at the time of this publishing.
