Mike McDaniel is an offensive genius

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel leads arguably the best offense in the NFL.

McDaniel uses his roster and strategy to create a fast-paced, high-scoring offense. He utilizes his speedy wideouts in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle to break down the coverage for his quarterback. One way he does it is by sending him in motion, which creates two advantages. It allows his receivers to get a running start and the coverage to be seen; if the cornerback follows the receiver in motion, it means it’s a man, and a deep ball is likely because of the speed advantage. If the defender doesn’t follow, it’s likely a zone, and the play design can be switched, or it leaves gaps open.

This offense is ranked atop the NFL in touchdowns with 56 and average yards per game at 414.1. It also leads the NFL in passing (274.4 ypg) and first in scoring (31.5 ppg).

This offense is a combination of West Coast offense and the “Air Coryell” system; these systems can’t usually be combined, but due to the speed the Dolphins have, McDaniel can combine the two and create a high-powered quick offense. The offense is so good at getting its players open. Hill, the primary beneficiary, is having an MVP-type season with 97 receptions, 1,542 yards from scrimmage and 12 touchdowns, which is a ridiculous season.

This offense didn’t just produce great passing games; it also produced a great rushing attack. The Dolphins’ run game ranks 4th (139.6 ypg) with the most rushing touchdowns (26). The offense allowed 31-year-old running back Raheem Mostert to have a revitalizing season. Mostert has 20 touchdowns this season–18 rushing and two receiving–almost 1,000 yards from scrimmage.

Rookie running back De’Von Achane has seven rushing and receiving touchdowns and 613 yards this season. Combining the strong passing scheme and great run game is why Mike McDaniel and the Miami Dolphins are atop their division at 10-4 and are potential Super Bowl contenders.
