Mike Gundy: Nick Saban Should Be College Football Commissioner

The current state of college football is basically the 13 colonies until they gathered some common sense and band together during the revolution. College football is broken and the Conference realignment is totally out of control. Yet nobody remains in charge and it’s nothing but constant chaos. Mike Gundy said what needed to be said. It’s time to make Nick Saban the commissioner of college football.

Gundy Via his weekly press conference:

“College football needs a commissioner,” Gundy said. “And if it’s one of the four guys, now, if it’s the guy at SEC commissioner, I don’t care, we need a commissioner. And then we need the Power Four, Power Five if we go back to it. Those commissioners are under them. And then we need a football oversight rules committee that is going to enforce whatever rules that we say there are. Whether that is recruiting, nil, salary cap, employment agreements, transfers, whatever those rules are and they need to follow the NFL model.”

“Coach (Mack) Brown in North Carolina when he retires, Coach (Nick) Saban, that’s your football commissioner,” Gundy said. “That’s who, that’s who, that’s Roger Goodell for us, in my opinion. Because he knows what he’s doing, he gets it.”

“I haven’t seen him at all,” Gundy told reporters of Saban’s media personality gig. “Somebody said that he’s really good. I mean, he should be. The guy is arguably a genius at whatever he has tried to accomplish. I have not, but I have had people tell me that he’s been excellent.”

“For the sake of the game, we’re at a real dangerous predicament right now and I hope somebody, like — I probably need to text Coach Saban before I say this, but I hope somebody like that becomes a college football commissioner, because he understands the importance of equality, in my opinion, because he’s a smart man that’s been in it for a long time,” Gundy said. “But that’s what we need, and we need to get it as fast as we can, before we start to lose it and then try to recover back, ala NASCAR and LIV with PGA golf has become a mess because of that.”

By the way, I said the same thing back in January. Whether it’s Saban or not, someone needs to be in charge. Right now, everyone acts out of greed based on TV contracts. Imagine if CFB had one voice doing what’s best for the sport? That sounds like way too much common sense to actually happen.

Also, I don’t blame Saban for taking a job with ESPN instead. Probably much less stressful that way post-retirement.
