In case you missed it, I recently did the post on the Matthew Berry challenge for the 2023-24 NFL Season. I fully expect to beat the piss out of him. However, I want to dive into one of the bullet points in that post a little deeper. The disrespect that Mike Evans is getting in fantasy football is insane and it’s gone way too far.
For the record, Evans is the number one player on Berry’s hate column for all pass catchers. There are only two wide receivers on the hate list (Michael Pittman being the other). Berry has Evans ranked as WR33 entering the season. I just want to go ahead and guarantee that Evans will finish better than that, barring injury.
I understand the quarterback position in Tampa stinks. The poo poo platter of Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence. I get all of that. However, Evans is still one of the best wide receivers in the NFL and can sleep walk his way to a top 20 finish at the position.
Furthermore, this Bucs team will probably be terrible. That means they will be in throw mode constantly. The targets and opportunities for Evans will be there. Especially in catch up mode.
Evans, 30, has literally notched over 1,000 yards in every season of his career. Literally all nine seasons he’s been over 1,000 yards. Evans’ lowest fantasy finish ever was WR27 back in 2015. He’s literally NEVER finished outside of the top 30. Like never, never. Evans has also finished as a top-ten fantasy wide receiver in six of his nine seasons in the NFL.
WR33? That’s so disrespectful. I don’t care who the quarterback is. Mike Evans is a top-30 wide receiver. I don’t see how it’s even a question. This will be an automatic loser for Berry unless he gets injured. I don’t try to predict injuries, but Evans has been very durable. He’s never played fewer than 13 games in any season.
For what it’s worth, Evans is also in a contract year and will be looking to cash in one more time. There is also a non-zero chance that Evans is dealt to a contender by the deadline, which would massively increase his value. Evans represents one of the best values right now in fantasy. Go draft him.
