Alex Orji had an up-and-down year as a junior at Michigan. Michigan was a disappointment all year before beating Ohio State and Alabama at the end of the year. A big reason for the huge step back following their National Championship in 2023 was their lack of offense. The Wolverines started three quarterbacks this year playing two quarterbacks in games consistently throughout the year. Alex Orji was the predominant rushing QB of the three and now he will transfer to take his skill set to UNLV.
Alex Orji is a 6’3” 235-pound junior who has played all three years at Michigan. He was never able to shine as he was behind players like JJ McCarthy and when he did play he struggled. Furthermore, Orji had a lowly 150 passing yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions this season. However, he did have 269 rushing yards and one touchdown on 57 carries. His size and dual-threat ability are what make him an intriguing transfer. However, he will need to figure out how to pass the game to be truly successful at UNLV.
I think UNLV is a fantastic spot for Alex Orji because the offense matches his skill set perfectly. Former QB Hajj-Malik Williams had a great season for the Rebels this year as they finished as a top-25-ranked team. Moreover, he excelled as a dual-threat QB totaling 851 rushing yards and nine rushing touchdowns. This system sounds perfect for Orji and he will be facing Mountain West competition rather than Big Ten defenses. However, it will be interesting to see how much the offense changes with Dan Mullen as the new UNLV head coach. Ultimately, I still believe UNLV is a great spot for Alex Orji where he can find more on-field success.
