Michigan names Dusty May next men’s basketball head coach

Dusty May was hired to be the next head coach of the University of Michigan Wolverines. The Michigan basketball program is a great historical program with a lot of success. However, the team has underachieved the past five years under former head coach Juwan Howard. In 2021, Howard led the Wolverines to a Big Ten regular season championship and an Elite Eight appearance. Now, after some disappointing years, Dusty May will try to get Michigan basketball back on top

In the 2023-2024 season, Michigan basketball finished in the basement of the Big Ten. Michigan finished with a 3-17 record in conference play and an 8-24 record overall. This team had lost their star player Hunter Dickinson to Kansas before the season started and did not have their normal pool of talent like teams that came before. It was an overall ugly year that Michigan Wolverines fans would like to forget. 

Now, next season they will have a new coach at the helm and the Big Ten will welcome three new teams USC, UCLA, and Washington. These former PAC-12 conference teams will only make the Big Ten even more competitive. May has had a lot of experience as an assistant head coach at a plethora of schools and a head coaching job at Florida Atlantic University. Now, May will have his work cut out for him heading into next season.

Dusty May’s coaching Résumé 

Dusty May started his coaching career as an assistant at Eastern Michigan and Murray State. He had a few more coaching stops before being an assistant at Florida and then landing the head coaching job at FAU in 2018. May spent six years at FAU where he ended with an overall record of 126-69.

May had a fantastic 2022-2023 season at FAU when he won the Conference USA regular season and the Conference USA Conference tournament. The Owls went on a magical run in March Madness as a 9-seed. FAU defeated Memphis, Fairleigh Dickinson, Tennessee, and Kansas State before they lost on a buzzer-beater to San Diego State in the Final four. May had success in 2024 leading the Owls to a second-place finish in the American Athletic Conference. Unfortunately, FAU lost as an eighth seed in the first round of March Madness against a tough Northwestern team. This is a big leap for Dusty May as he takes the reigns to a historical Michigan program. It will be interesting to see if May can bring Michigan basketball back into college basketball glory.
