During his time at Virginia Tech, quarterback Michael Vick had the Hokies on the verge of a national championship. 25 years later, he will be attempting to bring a new college team to similar heights. Virginian-Pilot.com is reporting that Norfolk State has reached an agreement with the former NFL standout to become their next head coach. Vick has never been a head coach, so surrounding himself with talented coordinators and assistants will be crucial to their success.
During a podcast recording with ESPN’s Adam Schefter in 2017, Michael Vick was discussing the idea of teaching and potentially becoming a coach one day. Here’s what he had to say (full quote from the same site)
“I think my heart is really into teaching, you know, the game of football,” Vick told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on a 2017 podcast. “I feel like I’ve learned so much from so many great coaches over the years. You know, I don’t want to bottle up a lot of knowledge, and (I) really can’t relay the messages that I want to relay to a high school kid because … you don’t have to dumb it down, but you can’t be as complex. And I get that.
“So (at the) collegiate level or professional level, you can express ideas. You can go into detail. You know you can coach hard, and that’s what I want to do.”
At the time, it was under consideration that Vick would join the coaching ranks in some capacity. Instead, he would turn to media, where since 2017 he has worked with Fox Sports as an NFL analyst.
Michael Vick should have some really interesting offensive ideas. I wouldn’t be shocked if he tries to bring in a mobile quarterback to emulate his style of play from his playing days. Norfolk State finished last season 4-8 last season, so there is certainly room to grow in this new role. Will success come early, as most expect from Bill Belichick with North Carolina? Maybe not. But this could be an interesting project to keep an eye on.
