Can Michael Pittman Jr Be Fantasy Relevant in 2021?

Michael Pittman Jr. enters his second season with the Colts. After being drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the former USC Trojan had a solid rookie year. Pittman was semi-productive despite having Philip Rivers as his quarterback and a potent run game with Jonathan Taylor. With the addition of quarterback Carson Wentz, Michael Pittman is poised for a huge year in 2021 fantasy.

In 2020, Pittman played in 13 games, hauling in 40 receptions for 508 yards and one touchdown. He did not have a great year in terms of fantasy production, as he finished 2020 averaging 7.6 points per game. It is a concern that Pittman was outperformed by Zach Pascal and T.Y. Hilton last year, but I think he takes over the reins as the number one receiver on this team. Additionally, this team does not have an elite tight end. I mean, Jack Doyle? Mo Allie-Cox? Give me a break. The bulk of the receptions will come from the receiving core.

The addition of Carson Wentz completely changes this offense. He is reunited with Frank Reich, and from a number of reports, Wentz has found a new love for the game with the Colts. If he can return to his 2017 self where he was in the MVP race, this offense could be scary. But if he looks like he did last year in Philadelphia, forget everything I just said. 35-year old Philip Rivers just threw for over 4,500 yards and 24 touchdowns. Is it crazy to think Wentz could provide a similar stat line?

The one thing that scares me about Pittman’s consistent production is the Colts’ rushing attack. They have three competent backs in Jonathan Taylor, Marlon Mack, and Nyheim Hines. Additionally, the Colts’ offensive line is one of the NFL’s best headlines by elite guard Quenton Nelson. Taylor rushed over 1,000 yards as a rookie, and I expect him to be just as productive in year two.

I think Pittman has WR2 upside, but I think his production is predicated on what version of Carson Wentz the Colts get. Also, what if Wentz is mad at Pittman for not giving up the #11 jersey and he just does not throw the ball to him? Just kidding, kind of.
