Michael Malone, Nuggets Agree To Big Contract Extension

After leading the Denver Nuggets to their first title in franchise history, the team has agreed to a big contract extension with head coach Michael Malone, ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski first reported Monday.

We do not know the official numbers on the contract, but NBA reporter Mike Singer noted that he will now be on contract through the 2026-27 season.

The Denver Nuggets haven’t left a single thing behind from last season’s success. Thanks to Malone, the team is starting off once again this season with an 8-2 record, only losing games to up-and-coming Minnesota Timberwolves and Houston Rockets teams.

Last season, Malone helped the Nuggets finish at the top of the Western Conference and fourth-best record in the entire league (53-29). Denver went on to knock off the Timberwolves, Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat en route to their first-ever title.

Nuggets Governor E. Stanley Kroenke made a statement regarding Malone’s extension.

“This extension is well deserved for Coach Malone and one we are very excited to announce,” Nuggets Governor E. Stanley Kroenke said via a statement. “You can easily point to the on-court success that Michael has brought and the improvements the team has made each year under his watch, and you can also point to the selfless, hard-working culture that has developed and grown during his tenure. We look forward to Coach Malone continuing on the sidelines as we all work toward our goal of bringing an NBA Championship to the city of Denver.”

With only 10 games into the 2023-24 NBA season, the Nuggets hold the third-best odds for the NBA title this season at +440, according to FanDuel’s latest odds tracker. Denver sits only behind the Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics for best odds, with the next closest odds behind Denver being the Phoenix Suns at +650.

Can the Nuggets do the unprecedented by going to back-to-back championship runs in the almost nine years Michael Malone has been coaching the team? Or will there be a new champion that hosts the Larry O’Brien trophy this season?
