Can Michael Gallup Be Fantasy Relevant For 2021?

The Dallas Cowboys have an elite wide receiving core. Amari Cooper is an established veteran, CeeDee Lamb looks like an up-incoming star in this league, and Michael Gallup is as consistent as they come. When Dak Prescott went down with a season-ending injury in 2020, the offense just did not look the same. With a healthy Dak returning, what does Michael Gallup’s fantasy value look like in 2021?

This Cowboys offense is loaded. From Gallup, Cooper, and Lamb to Zeke Elliott and Tony Pollard, there are a lot of mouths to feed in Dallas. Normally I would say the plethora of offensive talent on Dallas hurts Gallup’s value, but the Cowboys embody a pass-first offense. Additionally, this once-dominant offensive line has been plagued by old age, retirement, and a number of injuries. Ezekiel Elliott is coming off his worse year as a pro, and I question if he can regain his once elite running back status. With a battered offensive line and a running back who regressed last season, this offense should only see more pass plays.

Gallup finished last season ranked as the WR36 in non-PPR leagues. In 2020, he had 59 receptions, 843 yards, and five touchdowns. The Cowboys had three receivers finish in the top-40 for fantasy receivers in 2020, which is insane. What’s even more impressive, Andy Dalton was the quarterback for the majority of the season. Getting Dak Prescott back is huge for this offense. In the four and a half games Dak Prescott played in 2020, the Cowboys averaged 44.4 passing attempts, and Prescott was on his way to throwing for over 5,000 yards before getting hurt.

I think you could get Gallup somewhere in the mid-rounds of your draft. He is going to fall through the cracks because Lamb and Cooper are pretty established names to the casual fan. Also, with a number of elite rookie receivers coming into the league, people might gravitate towards a DeVonta Smith or a Ja’Marr Chase because they are the number one option on their respective teams. Gallup also benefits from lining up against a team’s second or third best corner, as so much attention is on Lamb and Cooper. I could see Gallup going for 60-65 catches, around 900 yards, and six touchdowns in 2021. He could serve as a low-end WR2, but I think he has the most value at the FLEX position.
