Tanner Scott traded to Padres

The Miami Marlins continue their exodus, while AJ Preller and the San Diego Padres continue to be one of the most aggressive deadline hubs!

With roughly two hours left until the end of the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline, the Marlins have agreed to send Tanner Scott to the Padres in exchange for prospects Robby Snelling and Adam Mazur plus a pair of other prospects, ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez was among the first to report Tuesday.

The full return, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan is Snelling, Mazur plus infield prospects Graham Pauley and Jay Beshears. Though he also adds that the Padres received right-hander Bryan Hoeing, who’s made 57 career appearances, including 47 in relief.

Scott was easily the best reliever remaining on the market entering Tuesday. He’s been exceptional this season, pitching to a 1.18 ERA–despite owning a 3.27 FIP–fanning 53 total batters with 18 saves across 44 appearances (45.2 IP). He’s been lethal against left-handed hitting, surrendering a .362 OPS against (!!) with a 40.4 strikeout rate. That’s absurd.

Scott, who turned 30-yeards-old on July 22, earned his first All-Star game with Miami this year. He is a rental, but in today’s reliever market, he was likely going to go for a sizable haul.

It’s been an active trade deadline for first-year Marlins general manager Peter Bendix. Miami’s already dealt A.J. Puk, Jazz Chisholm, JT Chargois and Trevor Rogers, among others. Preller was also uber-aggressive with this deal–on par for him at this time of the year–flipping three of the Padres’ top-5 prospects–plus Beshears, the 24th-best in their system, per MLB Pipeline.
