A day after getting their defense ripped apart on the first day of NFL Free Agency, the Miami Dolphins have added EDGE rusher Shaq Barrett, Bleacher Report NFL insider Jordan Schultz was among the first to report Tuesday.
According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, it’ll be a one-year deal that could be worth up to $9 million. We do not know how the contract will be incentivized at the time of this publishing.
Barrett, 31, was originally due a $15.04 million bonus this season before being a cap casualty by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in late February. Now, he will be looking to provide supplementary production lost by Andrew Van Ginkel, who signed a two-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings Monday.
He’s logged just 7.5 combined sacks the last two seasons (24 games) after his second Pro Bowl appearance in 2021. He finished with just 52 tackles, three additional tackles-for-loss, two pass breakups, three forced fumbles and one pick-six last season.
Barrett is a two-time Super Bowl champion and finished fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2019, his first season in Tampa Bay (after four with the Denver Broncos). He had an NFL-most 19.5 sacks that season with 58 tackles, 19 tackles-for-loss, 37 quarterback hits, six forced fumbles, two pass breakups and one interception.
He specializes in getting to the quarterback and will now be alongside Bradley Chubb and Jaelen Phillips, who are both coming off severe knee injuries.
Barrett is a high-motor pass rusher who was one of the best EDGE rushing options available on the free agent market. A $9 million flier is one worth taking for him, even if he’s not the most appealing option at this stage of his career.
