The Miami Dolphins had a busy day making a number of roster cuts to create more cap space. Mario Williams, Branden Albert, and Earl Mitchell have been released by the team. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo first reported the news on Mitchell and Albert while the Miami Herald was the first on the Williams move.
Starting with Branden Albert, he was Miami’s starting left tackle this past season and was due $10.6 million this season but releasing him will create $7.2 million in cap space. The Dolphins already have a much cheaper succession plan in place with 2016 first round pick Laremy Tunsil who was kicked inside to guard this past year.
The Williams release has been something that seemed inevitable for quite some time. He was even a healthy scratch for a number of games in 2016. Williams was signed as a replacement for former Dolphin Olivier Vernon but he never panned out for the Dolphins.
Finally, Mitchell will create another $4 million in salary cap space for Miami. Mitchell like Williams was a non-factor along the Dolphins defensive line.
According to Spotrac.com, the Dolphins now have just shy of $50 million in cap space to work with.
