The New York Mets have finally found their manager. After firing Buck Showalter, the Mets hired Carlos Mendoza to replace him. Mendoza, as you can see by the picture above, used to work for the Yankees and has been their bench coach since 2020.
Andy Martino of SNY was the first to report the news:
This is a huge piece of news by the Mets. They have totally cleaned out their management leadership this offseason. It’s not just Buck that’s gone. Billy Eppler got Wally Pipped and then was forced to resign. This marks the first major hire by David Stearns.
Mendoza may not have been the Mets’ first choice. Craig Counsell was given the bag by Chicago. Apparently, the Mets were interested in Stephen Vogt too, but he landed the job with Cleveland. Either way, the Mets felt that they needed to make a change after a 75-87 season in 2023. It’s a bit surprising that Stearns wasn’t able to come away with his guy that he worked with in Milwaukee.
Mendoza, 43, has been with the Yankees for a long time. He came up as an infield instructor in 2009. It’s not really surprising that the Mets went this route. They absolutely love bringing in former Yankees. At least it feels that way.
Let’s hear from you in the comments section. Do you think the Mets made a good hire here? Would the Mets have been better served hiring someone else? Feel free to let your thoughts fly.
