Did you know there is a new Mean Girls movie? Same title, just 2024 in parenthesis. How does the new iteration of Mean Girls stack up to the old one? That’s what we’re here to talk about while limiting the spoilers as best that I can.
The dog days of Summer are coming and you’re going to need something to watch. Mean Girls can be found on Paramount, HBO, and Amazon.
I have to start here. If you’re not into musicals, maybe skip this movie entirely. It threw me for a loop because I didn’t see it coming. Out of nowhere, the characters will just start singing. You get used to it but the movie would have been better without the musical aspect. I see what they were going for but the musical part of this movie just wasn’t necessary.
The cast they used for this movie is really good. Reneé Rapp, who is also in Sex Lives of College Girls (decent watch), nails Regina George. Avantika Vandanapu, who was in a prior season of Bridgerton, is an awesome Karen. Angourie Rice is a solid Cady too. The crew they got for the movie did their part.
I’ll give this movie a solid B-. Maybe that’s a tad high or low depending on your movie genre preferences. You appreciate the certain elements of the old movie but the musical stuff is hard to get totally past. I don’t regret watching it but it’s not the best movie you’re ever going to see, obviously.
