Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Matt Manning will be out for the remainder of the season with a broken foot after taking a 119.5 mph comebacker from Giancarlo Stanton, according to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News.
This is the second time that Manning has suffered an injury after being hit with a comebacker. The first came in April after Alejandro Kirk hit a comebacker up the middle, leaving him with a fractured foot as well. Manning was able to return without surgery after taking a little over two months to heal. a
Manning was showing promise in his third big league season. The Tigers’ 2016 first-round pick ends the 2023 season with a 5-4 record with a 3.58 ERA and 50 strikeouts over 15 starts.
Manning entered the Yankees game on a hot streak. The 25-year-old was coming off two impressive starts that saw him pitch 12.1 innings without giving up an earned run. However, Manning’s broken foot brings an end to what appeared to best form throughout the 2023 season.
His injury is not ideal for the Tigers. Detroit, who is out of playoff contention in 2023, is in a prime position to further develop its young core before the 2024 season rolls around. Unfortunately, Matt Manning will be yet another starting pitcher who has struggled to stay on the mound throughout the season. The same can be said for first-overall pick Casey Mize who missed the entire season after having Tommy John surgery as well as Tarik Skubal, who was sidelined until July.
