Matisse Thybulle is one of those guys who’s impact doesn’t show up on the stat sheets but you can feel his presence. That presence is his lockdown defense. That’s why I never liked using stats as a way to prove if I guy is good or not. Usually, using stats is a great guideline, but it will never tell the full story of a player. Defense doesn’t always show up on the stat sheet. Sure, we have steals and blocks as somewhat of a players’ impact defensively. But usually this never shows on-ball, off-ball, and help defense.
Regardless, I am going to show Matisse Thybulle stats here. As a rookie, he is only averaging 3.9 points, 1.3 assists, 1.1 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block per game in 17 minutes. The box score warriors just clicked out of this article. Now, the real basketball heads can have an intelligent environment. As I said, stats do not show the real story around Thybulle. Thybulle’s impact defensively is scary, he usually guards one of the best scoring guards or wings in his 17 minutes.
In order to play more than 17 minutes, Matisse Thybulle must work on his offensive game to be more of a threat rather than just strictly a defensive player. However, with him just being a role player as a rookie, he brings his impact on defense day in and day out. This will be useful whenever the 76ers go to the playoffs, especially if they expect to walk to the NBA finals. He can lock up a player the best he can to give the 76ers starters a chance to rest while not giving up too many points. If you haven’t had a chance to watch this kid, I heavily encourage it. There’s more to the game of basketball than just stats and Matisse Thybulle is living proof of that.
